2月23日 Social Networks? I just read an article about online Social Networks that said people who were most active online really have the poorest social networks in real life. Might explain why as I got better at speaking chinese I stopped blogging. interesting idea, anyway. I just read The Earth is Flat, by Thomas Friedman. Interesting book, considering my job. The book is mostly about globalization, and Friedman talks about people developing skills that transfer from place to plae. In Curlys immortal words " I resemble that remark". 2月20日 New Year Made it through the New Year holiday. I got an Asus EEE PC to replace my beloved Psion. It's much like the Psion, the display and keypad are a bit smaller, but it's got 3 USB ports and Linux for the OS, so it serves. I've been carrying it everywhere, using it like a PDA/Laptop/Ebook reader. Neat. Looking at my last entry, there are a few changes. I work for VanceInfo now (www.vanceinfo.com). I'm once again a PeopleSoft Consultant. I liked teaching at Tsinghua, but the visa issue and all decided me to bolt. I'll post a pic or two, maybe sometime this year. :) 9月24日 The Great Wall ( again)I went to the Great Wall again. This time I went with some Indonesian students. It was a fun time. I took some pictures, which I'll put here. 7月28日 Hot and wetIt's raining today, but still hot. So I just go from one air-conditioned place to another. It seems odd this summer. I have to talk to folks by MSN. People went off to Australia and the US and Guangzhou and etc. Is anyone still in Beijing??
Anyway the new class seems ok, I get a chance to rest up some so I'm finally getting over the cold.
I've been settling in the new place, finding out the neighborhood and once more studying chinese. I can almost talk with people again. I was worried, my chinese was actually getting worse. Lately I'm finding that I can explain myself to people though, so it 's improving again.
Not much news, otherwise. Life is quiet. 7月16日 Hell on wheelsWhew. I finished at Central, caught a cold, moved, started the IT class at Tsinghua. Been kinda busy.
Oh, yeah. Registered at the Police station. so I'm legal. :)
I'm also really tired. The cold wiped me out, the move and other stuff just have me beat. I'm taking it easy, resting and walking when it's not too hot. Should be back to normal pretty soon.
Life seems like a roller coaster. for once I'm coasting. :)
I still enjoy Beijing. This area doesn't have the fun neighborhoods like further east, but it's still friendly.
Off to home, I'm already tired again.
Hey, whoever's in Beijing, nows a good time for a get-together. I'm not very busy.
5月26日 Another graduationanother graduation at 对外经济贸易大学 ! It hardly seems like a year since the last one. It was great seeing all the faces I remember from 东方大学城 This group were freshmen when I first saw them, starting college. Now they're done. I have pictures, of course. I hope all of you who took pics will send them to me or at least post them where I can see them. Good luck, everyone. 5月9日 There will come soft rainsThe rain was unexpected, but nice. The weather cooled down nicely and the air was clear this morning.
The mayday holiday was nice. I took some days off to get a real holiday. It gave me time to fix the laptop, buy some new clothes, and still go out and look around.
I think I've solved the school problem, so I'll have a visa and worthwhile employment next year. Gotta sign the contracts though.
Otherwise things seem ok.
Went to TanZhe Si 潭柘寺 over the holiday. It was nice to see the old place again. It's been there a long time. Supposedly it was there before Beijing was a city. That's really a long time. It was funny how superficial everything seemed though, the age of the temple, and visitors paying to hang little paper parasols for luck. Wonder how long they've been doing that? Who could know?
The temple helped me keep perspective. Immediate problems seem so important, but in a few years what will they matter? A long view of things can help.
Guess I'll go contemplate. See y'all later.
4月26日 Singing the project blues...Haven't had the Project Blues in years. This morning I'm writing part of a scope document, when the project scope has just changed. I really dislike using the Waterfall method on package implementations, but Waterfall is very popular, in spite of it's long history of overruns and faulty implementations. I much prefer prototyping, which lets users actually test and try out the application as they go, but that requires managers to understand processes and to actually get involved in the implementation, which is unlikely in the paternal cultures of Europe and Asia.
It reminds me of the time we rolled out PeopleSoft to European and US offices. The US offices just asked what the setup should be, said OK, and did it. In the European office the IT manager insisted that another setup be used, did it his way, then complained incessantly that PeopleSoft didn't work right. This went on for a long time. People in the States or other parts of the world could dial in and get good PeopleSoft service over a slow connection. The Euro office had great difficulties. But, the Manager had spoken, so no-one could tell him he was wrong and it had to be changed.
Otherwise things look cool. I got a lead in Guangzhou, and Tsinghua is interested in having me teach MIS. Next year could be interesting.
It's annoying that Taryn and Jolin are in town and both they and I are too busy to meet. I'll have to think of something.
4月22日 Spring MorningIt's a nice day here. Cool, breezy and very sunny. Some friends took
me to a Vietnamese restaurant last night. It was fun, haven't had Pho
in a long time. It was also interesting in that none of us are native
speakers of chinese, but Mandarin is our common language. So we all
talked in our accented Mandarin. Later we went by a club and danced,
though we got tired of it fairly quickly. Today is straightening up and getting ready for next week. I tried the English classes on the Sopranos, with mixed results. A few people 'got it' and seemed to like the contradictory nature of the plot. Most, however, didn't like it or didn't understand. I'll have to try something else. I don't like Prison Break myself, particularly since the plot has taken on obvious political overtones. It's amusing to me that people here like the Teabag character in PB but don't like Tony Soprano. Maybe because T-bag is a psychopath, dangerous to everyone around him, while Soprano seems like a fairly intelligent and likable guy who just seems to be in the wrong business. And that business is driving him crazy. Time to check out some other series.... Desperate Housewives seems pretty popular. I just can't bring myself to use 'Friends'. Trying to explain that series would drive *me* nuts. It's too nice outside. I have to go out and enjoy it. Hasta la Vista, baby. 4月19日 Chinese medicineI haven't cared much for chinese medicine - 中药材- it tastes bad, there are lots of little pills to take, the counter in the pharmacy has dried glider lizards and snake skins, etc etc. But I've had a cold that just kept dragging on. So a friend took me to a chinese hospital -北京中医医院
The doctor took my pulse, looked at my tongue, and prescribed a lot of little pills and some very bad tasting stuff in little bottles. Now, a few days later, I feel better than I've felt in a long time. More energy, more alert, just generally better. Now I have respect for Chinese Medicine.
Yesterday I had a lecture. I talked on Consulting as a career choice. I thought it went well - I gave them the good and the bad, with the usual result that some students were very interested, while others decided they *never* wanted to be consultants. Probably for the best.
I ended up witha recruiting blurb for Worksoft. When I came in this morning there was already one resume in my in-box. That girl would make a consultant! Quick evaluation, quick and effective action.
This is something that I like - introducing students to Real Life. I think it gives them an advantage when they go out looking for jobs, especially with multi-national companies. The recruiting is fun, too. I get to find out who is really listening when I talk.
BTW, I'm looking for a new school. Anybody know of a school looking for a foreign teacher?
4月18日 Bored beyond beliefAnyone else a fan of LA Story? I'm not at the point of talking to street signs, but it's coming.
The PS project seems to be stalling. We have things to do that just aren't happening. If this were the US I would be forecasting doom. Since it isn't I'll wait and see.
I spent part of last week translating job titles into English. Then I set up Competency, enough for a demo. now I hear that we won't do Competency until later. Should have told me *before* I did it. Especially since I did it in about a day.....
School's kind of a bummer too. Schools seem to look at foreign teachers as migrant workers, to be cast off each year. They don't seem to be able to connect the instability in their programs to the way they dismiss foreign teachers at the drop of a hat. The schools here have some of the worst HR policies that I've ever seen. It's a good thing HR is being emphasized in schools. Maybe they can use it to catch up.
Anyway, the weather's nice, it's spring and I feel that I have few ties. all in all not a bad thing. 1月14日 WeekendSpent it on software project. Just like old times! I must have lost my mind.... I found a cool site for 汉字
a href="http://zhongwen.com">
Cool, hunh? Love it. 即便我每天学汉字, 我还不会看报或书 我应该很长时间学习汉语...... 1月9日 C'est finiGot grades done, can turn them in and be finished for this term. I've realized that I was way too disorganized this term. Good luck that my habits of order and filing pulled me thru. That will change though. Got a project going live on the weekend, and I gotta get ready for that! The change of pace should be good for me. I can change hats and try a different tack. As the bard said: All the world's a stage, and the people merely players on it. I'll change costume and roles. Watching the 4 Musketeers - the sequel to the 3 Musketeers - It's merely the 2nd part of Dumas' story, but to my mind is the best film adaptation of that story ever made. The scenes between Oliver Reed as Athos and Faye Dunaway as Milady are just great. One time lovers who are now deadly enemies - but who both remember the former time. George MacDonald Fraser wrote the screenplay, and he did a superb job. As did the cast- Reed, Michael Caine as D'Artagnan, Richard Chamberlain as Aramis, Raquel Welsh as Constance, and Charlton Heston as the ominous Richelieu. To me it's one of the best casting jobs ever. Made a lively little tale into a rousing story of love and intrigue. I'm having a dram of Laphroaig in celebration. A friend brought me a bottle, and I save it for special occaisions. No doubt 'twill lift my spirits a bit. It will help in my appreciation of the musketeers - I love the language they use, and a bit of the malt will enhance that. I've news that a set of 'Firefly' is waiting, and I'm anticipating. I really liked 'Serenity', the Tutor and I sat here trying to figure out just what the Putonghua phrases meant. :) She couldn't understand them much better than I did. In fact, I was the one to point out that they were Putonghua! Ah well, time to go. Gotta go in tomorrow and figure out what's up with the project. That will be and exercise in using Putonghua! Adieu. 1月4日 New Year!!Made it to another year!!! This one should be interesting..... Saw the movie 'Serenity' recently. Interesting movie, fun story and plenty of action. I was watching with tutor and one of the characters said something I couldn't understand... backed up, listened again - dong le ma? Hey, that's Chinese!!! Badly pronounced chinese, but there it was. We listened carefully throughout the movie, catching and trying to understand the phrases thrown out. 我想昧耳,昧心,变石头 screamed a girl later on. One character says "大家坐下“ . Really fun, that an American movie would have American actors speaking Mandarin. The story to the movie is that, far in the future, the US and China have colonized planets far from Earth. The people there have elements of both cultures, and use both English and Chinese in daily life. The movie starts with a look at the ship's name : Serenity, with the characters 宁静 behind it. Shiny, as they'd say: One of the most fun movies I've seen lately and I've seen it a lot cause I re-ran parts to catch the chinese:) Oh, well. Happy New Year everyone. Let's see how this one goes! 12月30日 It's snowingWoke up early, looked out the window and all was white. Too late for a White Christmas, but still nice to see. I have to go to work this morning, cause of the holiday. No rest for the wicked, I suppose. The earthquake damage has the 'net so slow that posting is a pain. More later. 12月20日 ChristmasIt's nearly Christmas. I can hardly belive it. This fall has passed too quickly.
So far I haven't done much to prepare for Christmas at all. I've been too busy getting ready for finals and working on the new job.
Monday night was nice though. I've been helping some students after class. They're Uyghurs, who were studying Chinese while the Chinese students were studying English. So their Enlish is lacking. They're improving fast though. Monday they took me to a Uyghur restaurant to show thanks. IT was nice. Good food and the place has a dance floor. I got to dance with 3 Uyghur girls at once!!! Good thing I'd learned some of the dances.
So the week started right. Maybe a Christmas party on Sunday and then the last week of exams. Cool!
Lunch time i here, gotta go. 12月10日 Shuttle is up!!!Another launch of the Space shuttle! I was just watching NASA TV, showing the orbital path over the earth. Looks like it's going right over Beijing! If the air were clear we might see it go over. Oh, well. Neat to think NASA's still pushing out into space. Good luck to them. 11月11日 They shall not grow old,As we that are left grow old, Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. Veterans Day in the US. Armistice Day in other places. A time to reflect on the ones who didn't come back. Ave atque vale. Showed United 93 for cinema. Got unexpected results: at the end of the movie everyone just sat there, except for some girls who were sniffling. They were stunned by the emotion. The abrupt ending, definitely not a happy one, seemed to leave everyone speechless. One student brought up an interesting point- she said she thought the passengers showed an American trait. Control over their lives was taken away from them suddenly and their response was to immediately try to take control back. I hadn't thought about it that way before, but it seemed like a valid observation. Should have a lighter movie next week. I came down with a cold, friday was strange because my voice failed in class, I started sounding like Mickey Mouse. It was odd, and funny. I was supposed to have an employment interview, but begged off, calling the lady and explaining (in a hoarse whisper) that I'd lost my voice. Hope she doesn't think I lost my mind as well. Today was spent mostly sleeping. I made soup from mushrooms and onions, drank Pu Er tea. I'm feeling better but I want to rest and get over the cold quickly. I talked with the cinema classes about movies. My aim is show movies that show some aspect of US culture ( that I can explain if necessary) and that's also interesting to the students. So I've got Last of the Mohicans(adventure) Good Will Hunting ( academic background) and I'm looking for a good romantic comedy. Any ideas, anyone? I'd like to show the Three Musketeers, but it doesn't have subtitles and the English is archaic and hard for the students to understand. It has it all though- humor, courage, nobility, treachery, love, tragedy. To me the scene between Milady(Faye Dunaway) and Athos(Oliver Reed) is magnificent. A meeting between two people who had been lovers, each had thought the other dead, each feeling betrayed by the other, now on opposite sides in a struggle for power. Excellent acting and directing. The screenplay for this version is written by George MacDonald Fraser, whose hero Flashman is the English version of Wei Xiao Bao. Good Will Hunting came into it because one class asked for a movie about US college life. I'm not into Animal House so I threw out the first movie I could think of about academia- one that I liked a lot, as I identify with Will. A Beautiful Mind is also a possiblity. Russel Crowe did a good job there. Few students ever ask me about Princeton so maybe it will be good. Back in the US a friend took me to see A Beautiful Mind. She said her mom had seen it and thought I should see it. To this day, I'm not sure if that was a compliment or not...... I got revenge by showing her a Klein bottle. Klein bottles are an anomaly in that they have only one side, -no inside or outside-. Very good for freaking out people who havent' thought about topology ( which almost no-one has:) ) This is getting to be a long entry. Maybe I should write more tomorrow. Staying home all day alone has me bored. I don't feel well enough to study but I can't sleep all the time. Eh, Can go look at a DVD. hmmm Black Rain? Japan meets the NYPD... yeahh....A 10月16日 HiatusFancy word for taking a break. I started this space at Dancing Girl's suggestion, in the summer over a year ago. It petered out because I don't put private things up here, so it gets to be a rather boring chronicle of daily life. I suppose if a major event come along, like another graduation, I can post pics here. Otherwise I'll use emails to communicate. 10月13日 Friday the 13thActually went pretty well. I had the Project Management students today. I talked about what project managers do, including the sort of things textbooks usually dont' tell you. They were pretty articulate and asked good questions. I think they'll be a fun group. The English class this morning started off dull, but I got them talking freely at last. One guy decided we should talk about sex. "Ok, it's your topic, talk about it." heh. He started off ok, but wanted to say something , couldn't seem to describe it, started waving his hands in the air maybe 20-30 cm apart. He whispered something to one of the girls, who translated " He means a condom" then she held her hands up with her fingers 2-4 cm apart. It was hysterical. Korean restaurant tonight, ate too much. Time to crash now. Later |
